Minos transforms genomic variant calling, the process of identifying DNA mutations from sequencing data, into a decentralized competition where accuracy is continuously measured and economically rewarded.

Minos
A configuration file: the parameter settings for one of the supported variant callers, the software that decides which differences in a sequenced genome are real mutations. The miner never runs the genome itself. What is paid for is the recipe that, when the validator runs it on this round's synthetic genome, finds the planted mutations best.
own docs · raw.githubusercontent.com
Miners will never be asked to upload outputs, they submit their variant-calling configuration
Validators run each configuration in a Docker container on the round's genome and compare the calls to the planted truth with hap.py, a standard genomics referee. Under v2, live per the network config: score = 100 x (0.70 x core + 0.30 x germline). Core is F1 per variant class by fixed difficulty weights, one-base indels heaviest at 0.40; germline penalizes false positives; a plausibility gate zeroes an implausible callset.
code · raw.githubusercontent.com · utils/scoring.py
V2_CORE_WEIGHT = 0.70; V2_GERMLINE_WEIGHT = 0.30
Winner-heavy. The top eligible miner of the round gets 0.8 of the weight; ranks 2 to 20 split the remaining 0.2 in slices that shrink by 0.9 each rank; everyone else gets nothing. A miner is eligible only after scoring in 5 of the last 20 finalized rounds. Validators fetch these values live; the code's defaults are fallbacks.

Sources disagree The about page and whitepaper say the top miner wins 100 percent of emissions (sn107-004, Winner-Take-All); the code's fallback defaults are 0.9 winner and 0.8 decay (utils/weight_tracking.py); the live config on 2026-09-19 is 0.8 and 0.9.
Seven validators were active on the 2026-09-09 chain snapshot. Commit-reveal is on. A validator re-runs every submitted configuration itself, in an isolated container, with hap.py as referee, so judging is a full re-execution rather than a sample. Round files are hashed before serving and released after the round, so any participant can reproduce a score. Validators below a stake floor are left out of the canonical ranking.

A round every 72 minutes, the subnet's tempo of 360 blocks, each with a fresh synthetic genome carrying hidden mutations. Weights are set every round. A new registration is immune from deregistration for 14,400 blocks, about 48 hours, three times the 5,000 most subnets use.

Nobody yet. The roadmap marks a production variant-calling service as phase five, labelled vision, with phase one, parameter tuning, the only active phase. The whitepaper names hospitals, biobanks and pharmaceutical companies as future customers. There is no price anywhere. Emission is the only income.

05 Production Deployment Ship the consensus caller as a production-grade service
Over-calling: a callset that emits far more variants than targets is penalized by the overcall guardrail, and an implausible ratio of variant types is gated to zero. Memorizing the answer: mutations are planted fresh each round at positions not published in advance. Sybil hotkeys: the code pays one representative per coldkey, but the live config on 2026-09-19 has reward_normalization set to false.
code · raw.githubusercontent.com · utils/reward_normalization.py
an operator registering K hotkeys occupies K rank slots and is paid K times for one round's work
Sources disagree The coldkey normalization exists in code at the pinned commit; the live network config returns reward_normalization false, so it is not applied.

What it says
The subnet in its own words: the line the index took from its front door, and what the team has said on the record. All 15 quotes in the map.
Their subnet
A 72-minute cycle in which the platform generates a synthetic genome with hidden mutations, miners submit tool configurations, validators re-run them and score with hap.py, and the most accurate miner takes all the emission.
Minos is a Bittensor subnet that addresses this through decentralized, incentive-driven optimization.
Winner-Take-All incentive design … The best-performing miner receives all the emissions
Our goal in this study was not to create a single synthetic genome example but to build the infrastructure needed for a growing library of synthetic genomes at scale.

Bittensor, in their words
Bittensor is named as the thing Minos is powered by and runs on, and as decentralised, incentive-driven optimization; there is no description of the network beyond the subnet's own use of it, and the OpenAI paper omits it.

What it shows
Explained from zero by the index, from the subnet's own materials, for someone who has never heard of Bittensor.
SN107 Minos runs a recipe contest for reading DNA, where miners submit settings for mutation-finding software and the judges cook every recipe themselves on synthetic genomes with planted mutations.
The commodity, explained from zero
When a lab sequences a person's DNA, the machine produces a long, noisy readout. Software then has to decide which differences from a reference genome are real mutations and which are noise. That step is called variant calling: "the process of identifying DNA mutations from sequencing data." Getting it right matters because a missed mutation can be a missed diagnosis.
Minos does not sell that software. Its output today is a set of tuned recipes: the parameter settings that make four existing variant callers, named in the roadmap, perform best on a standard test. The about page frames the value as a fix for a trust problem: "Today, labs self-report accuracy with no independent verification. Pipelines go unchanged for years."
Nobody buys the recipes yet. The whitepaper page describes a future where "hospitals, biobanks, and pharmaceutical companies can submit sequencing samples and receive high-accuracy variant calls." The roadmap lists that production service as phase five, marked VISION, while phase one, tuning parameters, is the only active phase. Here the comparison breaks: in a real recipe contest someone eventually eats the dish, and at Minos no customer has yet been served.
Why it is on Bittensor at all
The about page's claim is independence. A lab grading its own pipeline has every reason to be generous; a network of strangers who are paid only when their recipe beats everyone else's on a fresh, unpredictable test has none. The genomes are synthetic, generated every 72 minutes with hidden mutations, so a miner cannot memorize the answer key. What decentralization changes here is who does the grading and how often, not cost or coverage; the materials give no cost figure.
How the work gets done
Miners submit a configuration file for a variant caller; the README is explicit that "miners will never be asked to upload outputs." Validators download each configuration, run it inside an isolated container on the round's synthetic genome, and score the result against the known planted mutations using hap.py, a standard genomics comparison tool. The score is mostly accuracy: under the current v2 formula, 70 percent for correctly finding variants and 30 percent for avoiding false positives, with a gate that zeroes any implausible result. The about page says the top miner "wins 100% of the emissions," emissions being the subnet's share of newly minted TAO, while the live network configuration sets the winner's share at 0.8 with the rest split among the next twenty in decaying slices; the sources disagree.
How you would know it works
The scoring configuration validators use is public at https://api.theminos.ai/scoring/network-config, which showed v2 scoring and a five-of-twenty-rounds eligibility rule. The dashboard at https://theminos.ai/dashboard showed a live round and 63 of 510 miners active, but its accuracy figures load only with JavaScript.
What is missing
There is no price list and no customer. The on-chain contact address, contact@theminos.ai, appears nowhere on the site, the docs, or the README. The docs quickstart still lists freebayes, which the README deprecated on 2026-05-09. The chain description, "The Foundational Layer of Genomics," is a tagline, not a sentence.

Metaphor: a recipe contest where the judges cook every entry themselves. Every claim is drawn from the evidence set or the subnet's own materials; "(inferred)" marks a conclusion rather than a quote. Corrections.
